Steel slag is the most important residual of steel production, whose main use is focused on the production of building materials and in many cases remains as contaminants in landfills. Within these slags, those of the refining process represent 20-30 kg/tsteel. In present work, the use of white slag from steelmaking as a component of the matrix of agglomerated flux for the hardfacing of parts subjected to abrasive wear is addressed. From the chemical composition of the slag (CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 system) and its location in the phase equilibrium diagram, the addition of modifiers to oxide system is evaluated to suit its properties. An alloy system is added to the matrix to obtain a flux that deposits an alloy suitable for abrasive wear conditions. It is concluded that the obtained prototype of the flux makes possible to obtain a deposit with martensite and residual austenite in the microstructure, similar to commercial fluxes.
