Abstract

Worm gear transmissions in spite of being the oldest existent are one of the fewer studied taking into account geometry, kinematics and design. These transmissions can fail in diverse ways, being the most significant: wear, scuffing, pitting, and fracture Established calculation methods only exist for two of these failures: pitting and fracture. Nevertheless in the expressions that govern these calculations there are some miss precisions. This paper analyzes the procedure for calculating contact stresses that appears in the specialized texts and the inadequacies of these expressions.
