The municipal solid waste management (MSW) is an important worldwide challenge, with insufficient studies of its composition. This work objective was to establish the
generation rate, physical composition and recycling recovery of MSW in Havana residential areas. It was obtained that the average generation rate was 0.7 kg / person-d, similar to other cities in geographical area. To study the physical composition, the MSW were classified into 11 items and the organic waste represented the highest
percentage. Five components of MSW in Havana are promising for recycling activities, reaching the highest percentages of paper and cardboard. The presented results are a contribution to the study on the Integrated Management Plan of the MSW in Havana.
