Keywords:
life cycle analysis, management, urban solid wasteAbstract
The diagnosis of urban solid waste management (MSW) in Manta, Ecuador is presented. The generated wastes were characterized, classifying them according to its
origin and composition. The environmental impact was evaluated with Life Cycle Analysis, according to ISO 14040: 2006, using SimaPro 9.0.0.35 software and Recipe
Midpoint method. The results show the inadequate management of MSW in Manta. The per capita generation is 0.94 kg / hab / day and the largest amount of waste is organic and plastic. The main impacts are given by the final disposal of wastes, which affects all impact categories, mainly Global Warming, marine and freshwater eutrophication, marine and freshwater eco toxicity, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic human toxicity, due to gas emission. Paper recycling generates beneficial impacts in most impact categories, demonstrating the need to encourage MSW recycling.
