The results of an investigation carried out for knowing the causes of the failures of upper shafts of sugar cane mills is exposed in this paper. A structural analysis of the sugar mill main mechanism was made and the principle of operation of sugar cane mills is described. A new model for analyzing the movement of bagasse among the mills was developed. Using this model were determined the loads acting over each mill shaft and their influence on the upper shaft. The adjustment of the mill was taking into account, and the pressure of the bagasse on the shaft was assumed as a force uniformly distributed. Considering the upper shaft in horizontal position was calculated the reactions in the supports and the required torsor moment for the right mill work. Knowing these loads the hydraulic pressures in each piston were established. From the loads that act on the upper shaft set, it was modeled initially on supports and afterwards on an elastic foundation.
