Abstract

Introduction:
The Pleurotus genus is one of the most widely cultivated edible mushrooms worldwide, due to its easy adaptability and nutritional value. It grows on lignocellulosic waste, allowing the use of agroindustrial by-products and organic matter as cultivation substrates.
Objective:
To select the statistical optimization method to be used in the formulation of substrates for edible mushroom cultivation by reviewing the scientific literature.
Materials and Methods:
A search was conducted in recognized scientific databases, such as Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Selection criteria were established that included publications from the last five years, in Spanish and English.
Results and Discussion:
Substrate selection in mushroom production is crucial for growth, development, and yield; therefore, its chemical composition and properties can significantly influence the yield of cultivated mushrooms and the morphological characteristics of their fruiting bodies. By-products and residues can be used neat or through mixtures and substrate supplementation. To mix or supplement a substrate, a formulation is carried out empirically or through mathematical techniques, tools, and methods that allow for process optimization.
Conclusions:
The research conducted highlights the positive results of optimization methods in this process and suggests the use of response surface methodology to formulate substrate mixtures for Pleurotus spp. cultivation.
